How to judge a London salon

Look for the specific, not the general. A gallery full of beautiful blondes tells you nothing if you want knotless braids. Look for photos of the exact service you want, on hair like yours. Reviews that name a service — "brilliant fade", "best extensions I have had" — are worth ten reviews that say "lovely place".

Check whether they consult before they commit. A salon that books you straight into a full head of extensions or a major colour change without seeing your hair first is gambling with it. A consultation is not a sales stage. It is the part that protects you.

Check for range under one roof. If you need extensions, colour and braiding, having them handled by one team that knows your hair history is significantly safer than splitting them across three salons with three sets of advice.

Treat awards as evidence, not decoration. Awards mean the work has been assessed by peers rather than only by marketing. Combine them with reviews that name your service and you have a reliable picture.

What visiting Hector's is actually like

Hector's Global Hair with Zeal has been at 73 Lower Richmond Road, Mortlake, London SW14 7HJ since February 2003. Hector Obeng opened it after twelve years at Millers in East Sheen. It is one salon — no branches, no franchise, no second location trading on the name.

Booking

Online through our booking system or by phone. For anything significant — extensions, a colour change, a first mullet, braids, hair replacement — book a consultation first. It is short, it is the appointment that determines whether the main service goes well, and it means the day itself has the right amount of time allocated.

The consultation

We look at your hair rather than at a photo. Density, condition, colour history, scalp, what you have had done in the last two years, how much time you spend styling at home, and how often you can realistically get back in. Then we tell you what is achievable and in what order.

Sometimes that means saying no to what you asked for. If your hair needs recovery time before a new set of extensions, or a shade needs three sessions instead of one, you will hear it at the consultation rather than discovering it afterwards.

The appointment

Times vary by service. A men's cut is 30 to 45 minutes; a fade with a full reshape closer to an hour. Extensions and braids run considerably longer — braid appointments in particular can be most of a day, which is why we suggest the first slot if you are travelling.

You will be shown how to style the result before you leave, using products on your own hair. That is deliberate. A result you cannot recreate at home is only half a result.

Aftercare

By car, the A316 and Chiswick Bridge bring you in from the north and west, with parking nearby. From central London, expect around 40 minutes.
