Hair bleaching is the single most transformative — and most misunderstood — service in a London salon. It is also the one where the gap between a good result and an expensive disaster is widest. This guide covers what bleaching actually does, how many sessions you should expect, what it costs in London, and how to protect your hair through it.

What hair bleaching actually does

Bleach does not add colour. It removes it. The lightener opens the hair cuticle and dissolves the natural pigment inside the cortex, leaving the hair progressively lighter — through red, then orange, then yellow, then pale yellow. Where your hair stops on that scale depends on your starting colour, your hair's condition, and how long the lightener can safely be left on.

That last point is the one clients most often want to argue with. There is a hard limit to how much lift your hair can take in one appointment, and it is set by your hair, not by how much you want the result today. Pushing past it does not give you blonde hair. It gives you breakage.

How many sessions will you actually need?

Honest ranges, assuming healthy hair and no previous box dye:

• Light brown to a soft blonde balayage — often one session.
• Mid brown to full blonde — usually two sessions, six to eight weeks apart.
• Dark brown or black to platinum — realistically three or more sessions across several months.
• Previously box-dyed or henna-treated hair — unpredictable. This needs a strand test before anyone quotes you a plan.

Anyone promising you black-to-platinum in a single afternoon is either not going to achieve it or is going to damage your hair achieving it. A salon that tells you it will take three appointments is not upselling you. It is being straight with you.

Bleaching afro and textured hair

Afro-textured and curly hair can absolutely be bleached, but it needs a different approach. The cuticle layer on textured hair is naturally more raised, which means lightener works faster and moisture is lost more easily. The curl pattern itself can loosen if the process goes too far.

We also talk honestly about what the aftercare commitment looks like, because bleached textured hair needs consistent moisture to stay healthy.

What does hair bleaching cost in London?

London pricing varies enormously, and the headline number is rarely the whole story. A full-head bleach quote should tell you whether it includes the toner, the treatment, and the blow dry — because those are not optional extras, they are part of the result. Longer or thicker hair uses more product and takes more time, so most salons price by length as well as service.

The more useful question is what the whole plan costs. If you need three sessions to reach your goal shade, plus a toner refresh every six to eight weeks after that, ask for the full picture before you start. Protecting your hair through the process

• Bond builders. These are added into the lightener and used as a follow-up treatment. They rebuild the internal bonds bleach breaks. On any significant lift, they are not optional.
• Do not wash for 48 hours. The cuticle needs time to close after processing.
• Switch to a sulphate-conscious shampoo and a purple or silver toning shampoo once a week to hold the tone.
• Cut the heat. Blow dry on medium, always use heat protection, and give the straighteners a rest for a few weeks.
• Book the toner refresh. Bleached hair does not stay the shade it leaves the salon. Toner fades in six to eight weeks.

Red flags when choosing a London colourist

Skip anyone who will not do a consultation and strand test before a major lift, who quotes a price without seeing your hair, who cannot explain what they will do about previous colour, or who promises a shade in one session that your starting colour cannot support. Good colourists talk about your hair's limits early and often. It is a sign of expertise, not of caution.
