Every year since about 2022 someone has confidently announced that the mullet is over. It is not over. What has happened instead is more interesting: it stopped being a statement and became a default, and in doing so it changed shape almost completely.

From ironic to ordinary

The early revival mullet was loud on purpose. High skin fades, a hard disconnection between the sides and the back, and length that announced itself from across a room. It was worn as a bit of a joke, and it was largely worn by people who wanted to be seen making the choice.

That version has faded. What replaced it is a cut most people would not even label a mullet if they saw it on the street — softer sides, a gradual transition, and just enough weight at the back to give the silhouette away in profile. The shape survived by getting quieter.

The three shifts that made it mainstream

The fade dropped, or disappeared

This is the big one. Demand moved from high skin fades to low fades and, increasingly, to tapers with no fade line at all. A taper keeps weight in the sides and softens as it grows, so the cut looks deliberate for six weeks rather than sharp for two.

The disconnection softened

Early revival mullets often had a hard line where the short sides stopped and the long back began. Current cutting blends that junction, so the length reads as part of the haircut rather than as something left behind by accident.

It stopped requiring long hair

The most practical shift. A short mullet works on proportion rather than length — tight sides and front with only a few centimetres left at the back is enough to create the shape. That removed the growing-out phase that used to put most people off entirely.

Who is actually asking for it

The demographic widened a long way. It started with men in their late teens and twenties. It now includes men well into their forties, and a significant number of clients who arrive mid-way through growing their hair out and discover that a taper mullet is the most wearable stage of that journey — then simply stop there.

Texture has widened too. Curly and afro-textured mullets are now a substantial part of our men's work. Curl does much of the shaping for you, which means the cut needs less product and holds its silhouette better between visits than it does on fine straight hair.

What we expect through 2026

Three things, based on what is actually being booked rather than on what is being posted.

Tapers keep taking share from fades. The maintenance argument wins over time. Once someone has lived with a three-week fade cycle, the six-week taper cycle is a very easy sell.

More length at the back, less contrast at the sides. The overall silhouette is drifting towards a longer, softer shape — closer to a wolf cut in some cases, which is a related but distinct cut with its own guide.

Texture over sharpness. The finish people want is matte and touchable rather than sculpted. That is a product change as much as a cutting one: clay and cream rather than gel and hard wax.
