Body Butter for Men

Richer than a lotion and less slippery than an oil. Body butter is the answer to skin that feels tight after a shower and dry through a British winter.

Body butter, lotion or oil?

Lotion is mostly water with some oil. It absorbs fast, feels light and suits normal skin or warm weather, but it does not last on genuinely dry skin.

Body oil seals moisture in but does not add much water of its own, so it works best applied over damp skin. Body butter sits between them: a thick emulsion that both hydrates and seals, which is why it outperforms both on dry, tight or flaking skin.

Who needs it

If your skin feels tight within a few minutes of towelling off, that is dehydration and body butter is the direct fix. The same goes for the classic winter problem areas — shins, elbows, forearms and hands.

It also helps if you shower more than once a day, swim, train regularly, or work somewhere with aggressive air conditioning or central heating, all of which strip the skin barrier faster than most people realise.

How to use it without feeling greasy

The trick is damp skin and a small amount. Apply within a couple of minutes of getting out of the shower while the skin still holds water — the butter seals that water in rather than sitting on top of dry skin.

Warm it between your palms first so it spreads thin. Most people who find body butter greasy are using three times what they need on skin that is already fully dry.

Pair it with exfoliation

Body butter applied over a layer of dead skin cannot reach the skin underneath. Use a body scrub once or twice a week and the butter works noticeably better on the days in between.

That two-product routine — scrub weekly, butter daily on problem areas — resolves most everyday dry skin without anything more complicated.

Shop body butter at Hector's

Available with our body care range at 73 Lower Richmond Road Mortlake SW14 and online with UK delivery. It also pairs well as a gift with a scrub or shower gel.

Ask the team if you are unsure whether butter, lotion or oil suits your skin — it usually comes down to how tight your skin feels twenty minutes after a shower.

Body butter questions

Will it block pores? On the body it is rarely an issue. Do not use a rich body product on your face.

How often? Daily on dry areas, or after every shower in winter.

Can I use it on my hands? Yes, and it lasts longer than most hand creams.

Is it suitable for sensitive skin? Generally yes — ask us and we will point you to a gentler option.
