Modern Mullet for Short Hair

You do not need long hair for a mullet. A modern mullet on short hair uses contrast rather than length: tight sides a textured top and just enough weight left at the back to read as a mullet.

Can you get a modern mullet with short hair?

Yes. A short modern mullet works on proportion rather than length. If the sides and front are cut tight then even three or four centimetres left at the back creates the mullet silhouette. It is the fastest route into the style because you do not have to grow anything out first.

This is also the shape most men actually wear day to day. It reads as a sharp modern men's haircut from the front and only shows its mullet character from the side and back.

How short can the back go?

The back needs enough weight to sit past the natural hairline and form a soft corner. On straight hair that is usually four to six centimetres. On curly or afro-textured hair you can go shorter because the curl adds visual length.

Below that it becomes a textured crop or a taper rather than a mullet. We will tell you honestly at the consultation whether your current length can carry it or whether you need one growth cycle first.

Who suits a short modern mullet?

Men with thick hair that gets heavy quickly men who want a mullet without the commitment and anyone in a workplace where a full mullet would stand out too much.

It also suits clients transitioning out of a buzz cut or skin fade because it gives the growth a defined shape rather than an awkward in-between stage.

Short mullet at Hector's Mortlake

We cut the perimeter and the corner point first so the mullet shape exists before we touch the sides. Then we choose a taper low fade or skin fade depending on how much contrast you want and finish with texture through the top.

Styling a short mullet

Short mullets need less product than long ones. A pea size of matte clay through damp towel-dried hair then finger dry the back away from the head. That is the whole routine.

Book a tidy every three to four weeks because on short hair the shape disappears faster than it does on a longer mullet.

Short modern mullet questions

How long do I need to grow it? If your back is already past the hairline you can have one today.

Will it suit fine hair? Yes with a taper rather than a skin fade so the sides do not look thin.

Can I grow it into a full mullet later? Yes. We shape it forward over two or three appointments.
