Good, that's the right way to think about it, because a system isn't a one-off purchase. The yearly cost has three parts: the systems themselves, maintenance visits and home care products.
How many systems would I need in a year?
That depends mostly on the base. Very thin skin bases can last around a month, Swiss lace one to two months, French lace two to four, and mono bases three to six. So you might get through anything from two or three systems a year to one a month. Many men also keep a spare, so one is always ready.
And maintenance?
Most men come in every three to six weeks, which works out at roughly 9 to 17 visits a year. Each visit is a full clean, re-bond and trim. Stretching that gap is a false economy: that's when lifting and build-up start, and a system wears out faster.
So the base choice is really the big decision?
Exactly. The most natural-looking bases are the most delicate, so they cost more over a year. A hybrid base, with a lace front for the hairline and a tougher perimeter, is often the best balance of realism and lifespan.
